In drawing, a fixative is a liquid, similar to varnish, which is usually sprayed over a finished piece of artwork, usually a dry media artwork, to better preserve it and prevent smudging.

Artwork media requiring fixative include drawings done in pencil, charcoal, and pastel.

Two types of fixatives are available; workable fixative which allow you to continue your work on a piece. These are used between layers, or applied to protect an unfinished piece and return to work on it later, and final fixative which are non-workable, and should be used only when the artwork is completed. The fixative is applied lightly, without wetting or soaking the paper. Once the fixative has been applied, it provides some protection against smudging and ultraviolet light.
Ashrad Aerosol Fixative is a final fixative which is colourless and provides a matt finish.

Fixatives should only be used in a well-ventilated area.
